AppLink allows Ford-authorised apps, installed on a phone, to be accessed and controlled using the touchscreen and voice commands. When in use, the app is shown on the Ford SYNC 3 with AppLink screen. Some apps can access vehicle data, such as GPS and odometer, if you give them permission to do so. AppLink Catalogue. SYNC ® is available on most Ford vehicles. Features/functionality vary by vehicle/model. Driving while distracted can result in loss of vehicle control. Only use SYNC ® /SYNC ® 2/SYNC ® 3 other devices, even with voice commands, when it is safe to do so. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is.

DEARBORN, Mich., July 21, 2016 – With more than 15 million SYNC®-equipped vehicles on roads around the world today and 43 million expected by 2020, Ford is introducing a free tool for smartphone app developers aimed at making it easy and cost-efficient to develop in-car apps compatible with the company’s SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system.

Downloadable from the Ford Developer Program website, SYNC 3 AppLink Emulator is a software program that helps developers create AppLink-enabled apps by allowing them to test how their app will look and work on a SYNC 3 interface – without access to an actual vehicle.

“The SYNC 3 AppLink Emulator makes app development far more accessible to the developer community,” says Dave Hatton, manager of mobile app development, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services. “We expect this tool to open the door to a host of new and exciting car-friendly apps from developers, both big and small, around the world.”

Critical app development tool
The emulator allows a smartphone to connect to the developer’s computer – just like it would normally connect to SYNC 3. The software platform then mimics SYNC 3 by connecting to the app running from the developer’s phone. The user fine-tunes the look and functionality of the app, then can instantly see how the created features would appear on the in-vehicle touch screen.

The software allows developers to set certain conditions – such as vehicle speed, location, temperature and mileage – to test how the app responds to each. These customizable settings empower developers to make apps that deliver more personalized experiences for customers.

Making app development more accessible
The free software emulator, with its ready accessibility, will help speed development, especially in markets where developers have limited access to vehicles or Ford’s current method of SYNC-compatible app development – tabletop hardware units known as FordDev Technology Development Kits. Ford makes the kits, also known as SYNC-in-a-box, available through a San Francisco location.

Developer conference and hackathon
Ford will host its third annual SYNC AppLink Developer Conference in conjunction with CTIA Super Mobility 2016, Sept. 7-9, in Las Vegas. Ford engineers will be on hand to explain the newest software tools for developing more personalized, vehicle-data-driven apps.

In addition, the Ford developer team will hold a hackathon, where developers can put into action what they have learned for a chance to win prizes. Past hackathons have attracted developers from around the world, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Hong Kong and Japan.

“For Ford, embracing the global developer community and opening the door to innovation are critical aspects of our mission,” said Hatton. “As a company, we look forward to the wave of innovation we expect to stem from our growing efforts – all part of the Ford Developer Program.”

Ford Developer Program
Launched in 2013, the Ford Developer Program invites app developers from across the globe to innovate with the company in the auto industry’s first end-to-end developer ecosystem. The program now has more than 15,000 registered users and more than 90 AppLink-compatible smartphone apps globally. Spotify®, AccuWeather®, MLB.com® At Bat and iHeartAuto are a few popular apps that now feature AppLink capability.

AppLink is a suite of APIs that provide the ability for mobile developers to extend the command and control of a mobile application to the in-vehicle Human Machine Interface (HMI). AppLink transfers the normal functionality processed by touching a mobile device screen in to the familiar vehicle controls such as voice commands, steering wheel and radio buttons, and capacitive touch screens.
The applications run entirely on the mobile device without the need to install any software from the apps in the vehicle head unit. The AppLink APIs exchange program data as well as command and control information over a known transport layer allowing the SYNC system to exchange messages with any AppLink enabled application in a predetermined format. This template approach removes the burden from developers of having to recreate any UI on the vehicle display. This technology is similar to how Bluetooth devices and digital media are integrated to work on various production platforms.

SYNC is an integrated in-vehicle communications and entertainment system embedded in Ford and Lincoln vehicles. SYNC handles all of the commands sent from an AppLink application and delivers the intended message inside the vehicle. All UI including commands, display requests, vehicle data authorization, and responses are managed by the SYNC system on behalf of the mobile application, and communicated over AppLink.

SYNC AppLink, revoutionizing the way you interact with your vehicle.

All over the world, people are using apps while in their vehicles. These apps reside on mobile devices and require some level of interaction such as locating the device, picking it up, entering a lock code, looking at the screen, tapping, swiping, or scrolling on the screen. AppLink aims to keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, removing the device interaction completely.
Users build their app habits outside of the vehicle and then want to bring these same habits with them while traveling in the car. At the same time, in-vehicle user habits such as using voice commands, knowing where the buttons are located through muscle memory, and using large visual displays when appropriate, are ingrained in drivers. AppLink is a simple way to provide users a way to bring their favorite content in to the vehicle by combining the app features with the vehicle controls.
App developers, mobile operators, handset manufacturers and auto OEMs all need to work together to find ways to ensure a responsible balance between the habits of using a mobile application and the accountability of operating a vehicle.
Ford connectivity solutions, including AppLink, work to eliminate distractions to a driver, while still allowing an appreciable level of enjoyment from the millions of apps that are used every day. We encourage you to work together with Ford in an effort to keep driver’s hands on the wheel and eyes on the road by AppLink enabling your mobile app.

The resources on developer.ford.com are intended to provide developers the ability to AppLink enable current commercially available mobile applications. In-vehicle app usage should provide a responsible user experience that extends the command and control of habitual features within an application to the vehicle HMI.
We also understand that developers may recognize opportunities to utilize the AppLink resources to create new applications. Ford encourages new and exciting solutions in areas such as safety, entertainment, and navigation and hopes to facilitate the developer community to explore and innovate in ways that can contribute to the proud history of leading innovation and technology here at Ford.

AppLink communicates only with the mobile application installed on the user’s device using the Bluetooth protocol. This means that there is no additional modem connection associated with the vehicle and the wireless network. Any network usage requirements are the responsibility of the application, the device, and the network. So any limitations that users normally encounter while using an application on a given network will still be present while connected to SYNC via AppLink.
Just as in every other use case, network coverage and signal strength will have an impact on the productivity of an application. Interfacing with a vehicle does not add or reduce any signal strength.
If an application streams audio content or requires network awareness in any fashion, the same results and limitations seen normally with in-vehicle use will be recognized when connected over AppLink.
